We remember events, milestones, and people when they touch our lives with special significance.<\/p>\n<p>Can we apply this principle to leadership?<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re often tempted to gauge our success by measurable outcomes: productive meetings; \u00a0tasks completed; or the number of volunteers serving in a program. <em>(You had how many volunteers at VBS?!).<\/em>\u00a0 But the real test of leadership success may be how well you&#8217;re remembered by those you lead.<\/p>\n<p>Years from now your volunteers won\u2019t recall the awesome agenda at today\u2019s meeting but they will remember whether you took time to connect with them on a personal level. They will always remember how your life impacted theirs&#8212; for better or for worse.<\/p>\n<p>Use this personal evaluation to see if you\u2019re the kind of leader who will be remembered by those who serve with you. \u00a0For each statement below, determine if it applies to you &#8220;Always&#8221;, &#8220;Sometimes&#8221; or &#8220;Never&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>1. \u00a0I spend time with my volunteers in\u00a0non-work related activities.<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0 I set aside time each week to pray\u00a0for my volunteers.<\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0 Volunteers approach me to enjoy\u00a0personal conversations.<\/p>\n<p>4.\u00a0 Other people see me as kind in\u00a0dealing with problems and disagreements.<\/p>\n<p>5.\u00a0 Most of my volunteers would say\u00a0I\u2019m patient.<\/p>\n<p>6.\u00a0 I\u2019m flexible even when I&#8217;ve planned\u00a0everything out.<\/p>\n<p>7.\u00a0 I maintain a balance between being\u00a0fun and being serious.<\/p>\n<p>8.\u00a0 I respect the options of my volunteers\u00a0even when they\u2019re different from mine.<\/p>\n<p>9.\u00a0 I involve volunteers in planning events\u00a0and activities.<\/p>\n<p>10. I regularly express words of affirmation\u00a0and appreciation to those who serve.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Scoring<\/strong> Give yourself 2 points for \u201cAlways\u201d; 1 point for \u201cUsually\u201d; and 0 for \u201cNever\u201d.\u00a0 Use this score to celebrate your magnetic qualities and to examine ways to improve the effectiveness of your leadership to volunteers.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>15-20 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Give yourself a standing ovation.<\/li>\n<li>10-14\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 You\u2019re on your way.\u00a0 Keep looking for ideas to improve what you\u2019re doing.<\/li>\n<li>Below 9 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Time to move forward.\u00a0 Continue to work on ways to be more relational.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ask anyone what they were doing on September 11, 2001&#8230;and they&#8217;ll know.
