I’ll admit it—I wasn’t that interested in the Super Bowl this year\u00a0because the Broncos\u00a0weren’t playing.\u00a0But the Patriots and\u00a0Falcons fought a good game and I quickly found myself cheering! Identity<\/strong> \u2013 Sport fans are quick to wear their team’s colors\u2026and pay big bucks to do so. What if all your Sunday school teachers were identified with the colors of your\u00a0children’s ministry\u00a0brand? What if all the guest services volunteers wore\u00a0attractive hats or t-shirts? Could we create team ministry excitement with brand identity? I think so.<\/p>\n Food<\/strong> \u2013 Ever notice how many food commercials they show\u00a0during the\u00a0Super Bowl? Wings, nachos, pizza. There’s something about gathering around food that builds community. Even Jesus enjoyed building relationships while at someone’s house for dinner. Look for ways to enjoy snacks, coffee, dessert, or even a full meal with your volunteers. Share food at meetings, training, or appreciation events. How about\u00a0stocking the volunteer check-in room with special treats and goodies? Don\u2019t forget the donuts.<\/p>\n Cheerleaders<\/strong> \u2013 every sports team has them. With pom poms in hand they cheer on the team till the final finish. Who’s cheering for your volunteers? We motivate people to faithful service when we affirm them. It needs to be ongoing, authentic, and personal. Sometimes a pat on the back and a word of encouragement is all someone needs to make it to the fourth quarter!<\/p>\n Community<\/strong> \u2013 Did you go to a Super Bowl party?\u00a0It’s more fun to watch the game with friends.\u00a0Sometimes the synergy that comes from a group is more energy-producing than when we’re alone. (If you’ve ever been to a stadium with 100,000+ screaming fans, you know what I mean.) Plan times when your volunteers can connect with others who serve—and have some fun.
