Here at <a href=\"http:\/\/group.com\">Group<\/a>, prayer is at the forefront of all that we do. Before ideas become reality, before drawings are drafted, and before words are put onto a page, we pray. We pray that God would guide our conversations and direction to create resources that help people grow in a relationship with Him. She prays that God will give her the desire of her heart: a son. She promises that if God answers her prayer, she\u2019ll give her son back to God. God hears and answers Hannah\u2019s prayer, and she gives her son back to God when he\u2019s weaned. God hears\u00a0<em>our<\/em>\u00a0prayers, too.<\/li>\n<li><u>Bible Point:<\/u>\u00a0God hears our prayers.<\/li>\n<li><u>Summary Verse:<\/u>\u00a0\u201cLive in harmony with each other. Don\u2019t be too proud to enjoy the company of ordinary people. And don\u2019t think you know it all!\u201d (Romans 12:16).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Dig Deeper<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><u>You\u2019ll Be Teaching:<\/u>\u00a0<em>God hears our prayers.\u00a0<\/em>This can be hard for kids to understand, as they\u2019ve probably experienced praying for something and not getting the answer they wanted. Help kids see that even though God doesn\u2019t always do what we ask, he\u00a0<em>always\u00a0<\/em>hears us and he cares about our hearts\u2019 desires.<\/li>\n<li><u>Think About:<\/u>\u00a0What\u2019s at the top of your prayer list right now? How do you feel about God hearing your heart\u2019s desires? We\u2019ll learn about a woman in the Bible who prayed and how God heard her prayer. Let\u2019s talk about what\u00a0<em>we\u00a0<\/em>hear.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Share<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tell kids what\u00a0<em>your\u00a0<\/em>favorite sound is. Let\u2019s see what the Bible says about the prayer of a woman named Hannah. The Bible is special because it\u2019s full of true stories about what God has done. God can talk to us as we read and hear about his works. Then have kids share their answers with a partner. Afterward, ask a few kids to tell the whole group what they talked about.<\/p>\n<p>Ask:\u00a0<strong>\u2022 Explain whether you think it\u2019s okay to ask God for that gift.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Say:\u00a0<strong>Today we\u2019re going to learn that\u00a0<u>God hears our prayers<\/u>. I want to make sure you know that\u00a0<em>doesn\u2019t\u00a0<\/em>mean we can treat God like a vending machine. Prayer isn\u2019t about just making a wish list and expecting God to give us everything we want. But it\u2019s okay to talk to God about what we want. Let\u2019s look at today\u2019s true Bible story to think more about what prayer really means.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ask<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Say:\u00a0<strong>We\u2019re going to learn from the Bible about how a woman named Hannah prayed. Hannah really wanted a son, but she didn\u2019t have one. In Bible times, men sometimes had more than one wife. Hannah\u2019s husband was also married to a woman named Peninnah, who did have children. Here\u2019s how Peninnah treated Hannah.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Read 1 Samuel 1:6.<\/p>\n<p>Ask:\u00a0<strong>\u2022 Tell about a time someone made fun of you.\u00a0<\/strong>Share your own example first, and then have kids share with their partners.<\/p>\n<p>Say:\u00a0<strong>It hurts when people make fun of us. But this was\u00a0<em>especially\u00a0<\/em>hurtful to Hannah because it hit a sore spot. Hannah really wanted a baby.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Hannah\u2019s desire for a baby was different from the things we said we\u2019d want for our birthdays. This was a deep desire of her heart, so she prayed to God for a baby.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Read 1 Samuel 1:10-11.<\/p>\n<p>Distribute red construction paper, scissors, and pens. Say:\u00a0<strong>Cut out a heart, and then think about your heart\u2019s desire. Remember, this is different from wanting a video game or a new phone. Hannah was really hurting because she wanted a baby so badly. Think about it this way: What would you ask God to change about your family, friendships, or even yourself? What really makes your heart hurt?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Write or draw on your heart what you would ask God. No one else will see it; this is between you and God.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Allow time. You may wish to play reflective music to help set a more serious tone. When kids have finished, have them tape their hearts to a wall with the words facing in so only blank hearts are visible.<\/p>\n<p>Pray:\u00a0<strong>God, we can\u2019t see the desires on these paper hearts. But you see them, just as you see inside our human hearts. We ask that you\u2019ll hear our prayers and satisfy our hearts\u2019 desires. In Jesus\u2019 name, amen.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Say:\u00a0<strong><u>God hears our prayers<\/u>. He sees our hearts\u2019 desires, and he hears when we ask him for help.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Thank<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Say:\u00a0<strong><u>God hears our prayers<\/u>. And he heard Hannah\u2019s prayer. This is what happened.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Read 1 Samuel 1:20.<\/p>\n<p>Say:\u00a0<strong>Although this verse doesn\u2019t use the word\u00a0<em>thanks<\/em>, Hannah named her baby based on the fact that he was an answer to prayer. She showed a thankful attitude.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Let\u2019s give thanks to God, too.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Have kids sit in a circle.<\/p>\n<p>Say:\u00a0<strong>Let\u2019s think of things we want to thank God for, and we\u2019ll use each letter of the alphabet to come up with a list. The first person will say something to be thankful for that starts with A, the next person will say something that starts with B, and so on.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>If you want, you can skip the really hard letters like Q, X, and Z. So let\u2019s pray!\u00a0<\/strong>Older kids may need to help younger kids sound out words, or you can let younger kids simply name something they\u2019re thankful for, regardless of the letter it starts with.<\/p>\n<p>After you\u2019ve gone through the alphabet, have kids put their hands in the middle of the circle like a sports team and say \u201cThank you, God!\u201d as they lift their hands.<\/p>\n<p>Say:\u00a0<strong><u>God hears our prayers<\/u>, including our prayers of thanks.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Give to God<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Say:\u00a0<strong>We talked about asking God for things, but we can\u00a0<em>give\u00a0<\/em>to God, too. That\u2019s what Hannah did next. She remembered her promise to God, and she was thankful that\u00a0<u>God heard her prayer<\/u>. She took Samuel to the Tabernacle to give him to God.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Read 1 Samuel 1:27-28. Then give each child a new piece of plain white paper, and set out markers and tape to share.<\/p>\n<p>Say:\u00a0<strong>Think about a gift you could give God. A good gift is something that is a little hard to give up. Maybe it\u2019s giving some of your time or helping your brother or sister when you don\u2019t feel like it. Write or draw your gift on your paper. Then decorate the other side of your paper to look like wrapping paper. Fold it up, and tape it together like a gift.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Allow time. When kids have finished with their gifts, say:\u00a0<strong>Since Hannah returned to the Tabernacle where she\u2019d asked for a son, let\u2019s return to our wall of hearts and give our gifts to God.\u00a0<\/strong>Have kids make a pile of gifts in front of the hearts. You may wish to play reflective music as kids present their gifts.<\/p>\n<p>Say:\u00a0<strong><u>God hears our prayers<\/u>, and we can respond to him by giving back to him.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Praise<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Say:\u00a0<strong>Hannah can teach us one more kind of prayer.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Reread 1 Samuel 1:28, emphasizing the last sentence. Distribute colorful paper, and have kids cut out strips of paper about 1 inch tall and 4 inches wide.<\/p>\n<p>Say:\u00a0<strong><em>Worship<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0<em>praise<\/em>\u00a0often means telling God things we love about him. For example: I love you, God, because you\u2019re\u2026\u00a0<\/strong>Share your own ending to the sentence.<\/p>\n<p>Say:\u00a0<strong>Now it\u2019s your turn. On your strips of paper, write\u00a0<em>your\u00a0<\/em>endings to the sentence, \u201cI love you, God, because you\u2019re\u2026\u201d If you can\u2019t write, ask someone to help you write your ending.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After kids write, lead them in standing up and throwing their papers like confetti while shouting out their praises to God. You could also play upbeat praise music as kids throw their confetti.<\/p>\n<p>Say:\u00a0<strong><u>God hears our prayers<\/u>. When purchasing tubing, it helps to take a funnel along to confirm that it will fit inside or around the tube. When we tested this activity, the inside diameter of our tubing was \u00bd inch.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Attach the Balloon<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Say:\u00a0<strong>Today we\u2019re discovering that\u00a0<u>God hears our prayers<\/u>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ask: \u2022\u00a0<strong>Think about inventions that help people hear more clearly. Can you name some?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Say:\u00a0<strong>A stethoscope helps doctors hear heartbeats more clearly. Let\u2019s make a stethoscope and experiment with our hearing.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Form mixed-age pairs, and give each pair two funnels, a 2-foot piece of tubing, a balloon, and a pair of scissors.<\/p>\n<p>Say:\u00a0<strong>First, let\u2019s cut off the part of the balloon we blow into so we can stretch the balloon over the funnel.\u00a0<\/strong>Demonstrate so kids can see, making sure the balloon is as tight and flat as possible. Secure the edges of the balloons with duct tape. Have older partners do the same.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/digin-resources.group.com\/media\/9388\/fixed-w6-ol2-65645.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Attach Funnels<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Have partners place the narrow end of the funnels either inside or around the ends of the tubing. Twist to make sure the funnels are nice and tight.<\/p>\n<p>Say:\u00a0<strong>Great job! You\u2019ve made a homemade stethoscope! Let\u2019s tap a heartbeat on the balloon side of the stethoscope.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Listen and Respond<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Have partners each hold an end of the stethoscope. The partner holding the balloon side should gently tap on the balloon like a heartbeat while the other partner listens through the opposite funnel. Invite partners to switch ends so both have a chance to tap and listen. Encourage kids to listen and compare taps with and without the funnel.<\/p>\n<p>Ask:\u00a0<strong>\u2022 How did the stethoscope change the sound you heard?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Say:\u00a0<strong>The heartbeats we tapped were louder when we listened through the stethoscope. Now let\u2019s experiment and see what other ways we can communicate.<\/strong>Encourage kids to try different experiments. Options include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tap different rhythms and have their partners clap them back.<\/li>\n<li>Whisper messages into the balloon end that the partners repeat or respond to.<\/li>\n<li>Remove the balloon and talk to each other through the funnels as if using telephones.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Talk About It<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ask:\u00a0<strong>\u2022 How is talking and listening through our stethoscopes like or unlike talking and listening to God?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Say:\u00a0<strong><u>God hears our prayers<\/u>.<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>He doesn\u2019t need a stethoscope to hear us better. Even if we don\u2019t say a word, God hears our hearts\u2019 deepest feelings. In our Bible story, Hannah\u2019s heart longed for a baby. She prayed with words and with her heart, and God heard and answered her prayer.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ask:\u00a0<strong>\u2022 Who do you usually share your deepest thoughts and feelings with?<\/strong>\u00a0Share an example from your own life to start. Perhaps you share with a spouse or a best friend you\u2019ve known for a long time.<\/p>\n<p>Say:\u00a0<strong>Good friends and family members listen to us. But sometimes we have thoughts and feelings that we don\u2019t share with anyone but God.\u00a0<u>God hears our prayers<\/u>. God hears\u00a0<em>millions<\/em>\u00a0of prayers from all over the world every day, and God can pick out every voice and every prayer. God hears you and me when we pray, even among all those millions of other voices. That\u2019s amazing! Let\u2019s play a game to see how well we can pick out voices in a crowd.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Invite a willing child to be It. Then blindfold It, and help him or her to the center of the play area. Have the other kids spread out around It.<\/p>\n<p>Explain that you\u2019ll whisper the name of one of the other kids to It. It will continually call out that name and try to find that person by listening for the name in the crowd of other names. The other kids will call out their own names. Kids may move slowly around the room, and It will try to find and tag the person he or she is calling.<\/p>\n<p>When It tags the person he or she was calling, that person will become the new It. You can choose which way you want to pray.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Set the red construction paper, scissors, tape, and some of the pens in a corner near the hearts from Core Bible Discovery. Say:\u00a0<strong>If you choose to come to this corner, you can cut out another heart and write or draw a prayer on it, asking God for your heart\u2019s desire. Then you can tape it to the wall with the other hearts.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Set some plain white paper and pens in a second corner. Say:\u00a0<strong>If you choose to come to this corner, you can make another list or picture collage of things you\u2019re thankful for. This time, you don\u2019t have to use each letter of the alphabet; just make a list.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Set some plain white paper and some markers in a third corner, near the pile of gifts from Core Bible Discovery. Say:\u00a0<strong>If you choose to come to this corner, you can give another gift to God.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Set the colored paper, scissors, tape, and some markers in the fourth corner. Say:\u00a0<strong>If you choose to come to this corner, you can write more praises to God and arrange them in a fun mosaic on the wall. But do it quietly so you don\u2019t disturb others. Only choose this corner if you know how to write.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Let kids choose a corner and complete their prayer experience.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pray<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Bring everyone back together in a huddle. Pray:\u00a0<strong>God, thank you that\u00a0<u>you hear our prayers<\/u>, whether we\u2019re asking, thanking, giving to you, or praising you. Help us turn to you in prayer every day.
