Whether they\u2019re contributing something truly worthwhile or they just like to hear themselves speak, these kids haven\u2019t yet learned when to, well,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">zip it<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">There is a simple approach to minimizing the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">monopolizers<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. First, jump in when they take a breath. (They<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0have\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to come up for air eventually!) Say something like, \u201cThank you so much for sharing that!\u201d Then validate them by confirming one key point the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">y<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0made.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Then immediately move on by asking someone else to speak. You might say, \u201cLet\u2019s get some other thoughts. [Other\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">preteen<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">], what do you think?\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Your goal isn\u2019t to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">stop the dominators from talking, but to sincerely validate them while also giving other kids the chance to speak into the conversation.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If your chatterbox continues to be a problem, don\u2019t hesitate to take the child aside after class and talk privately. You can say, \u201cI love hearing your thoughts during our discussions. You\u2019re doing a great job!
