Even when it seems \u201cgood natured,\u201d playfully making fun of someone is almost always a negative experience for the victim. It should be stopped as soon as possible.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Here are some tips for dealing with teasing in the heat of the moment.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Reaffirm Your Values<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Direct your group\u2019s attention to your <a href=\"http:\/\/group.com\/bebold\">BE BOLD<\/a> Values poster. Remind them that we accept each other, we respect each other<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">we\u2019re all in this together.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Redirect<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If there\u2019s an obvious attempt to gain attention, redirect the situation very firmly and purposefully. Get the group to focus immediately on something else entirely. Get all the children engaged in a new question or activity as soon as possible.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Move Closer<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If redirection didn\u2019t defuse the situation completely, or it happens again, move yourself physically closer to the culprit. This sends a message that you are watching\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">him or her<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and that you\u2019re in control of what\u2019s happening in the group.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Set\u00a0<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">n Example<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The most important thing to remember is that you, as the teacher, help set the tone for the entire group. Take extra care not to make sarcastic jabs during your time together, whether at another leader, a child, or any of the activities you\u2019re doing together. Your positive example demonstrates<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0how the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0BE BOLD Values\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">are lived out.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">You never know when you might\u2019ve said something that could have devastated a kid.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Even a minor offhand joke or \u201cplayful\u201d comment has the potential to be a sensitive area for some kids.
