Let\u2019s take affirmation, for example. Who doesn\u2019t love being confirmed and encouraged? Affirmation is great, right?<\/p>\n

Yes, BUT. When you affirm a child for their answer to a question, your reaction is loaded with unintended consequences. You\u2019ve just affirmed ONE child\u2026but not anyone else. When you say, \u201cThat\u2019s a great answer,\u201d you\u2019re shutting down additional responses. People are less inclined to share if the \u201cright\u201d answer has already been given. And if they don\u2019t also hear the same enthusiastic response, they will feel wrong or even shamed.<\/p>\n

Affirming one child\u2019s answer is almost as harmful as rebuking another child\u2019s response.<\/p>\n

Instead, simply say, \u201cThank you for sharing.\u201d BE BOLD<\/a> should always maintain an environment where \u201cwe respect each other\u2019s thoughts and struggles.\u201d So strive not to qualify kids\u2019 responses, and instead just acknowledge them and show your straightforward appreciation for their participation.<\/p>\n
